History - Teaching & Learning
Curriculum Intent
At Dundonald Primary School we believe that History teaching should ignite pupils' curiosity about our past. Our curriculum is designed to support children in building a sense of chronology. Children learn about historical events that have occurred in local, national and world history. Teaching equips pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically and analyse historical evidence.
Our children participate in trips and workshops to enrich their historical learning. As a Rights Respecting School the teaching of History supports children to appreciate the complexity of people's lives, the diversity of societies and the relationships between different groups.
Curriculum Implementation
We have chosen to follow the Kapow scheme of work for History from Early Years to year 6. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that children build upon key historical skills. Lessons provide engaging and enriching learning opportunities which encourage children to investigate history as historians do. Each topic focuses on a chronological overview of the period in time they are studying to allow children to develop their own 'mental timeline'. This will then allow them to consider Britain's role in the past and that of the wider world.
In EYFS, children are taught about history by discussing their own key experiences, helping them recognise that they each have their own histories. In Key Stage 1 and 2, units are focused around an enquiry-based question and children are encouraged to follow an enquiry cycle (Question, Investigate, Interpret, Evaluate and conclude, Communicate).
To conclude their historical learning, in year 6 children are asked to create their own historical enquiries using sources and the skills they have developed throughout their time at Dundonald.
The key historical concepts we teach are:
- Change and continuity
- Cause and consequence
- Similarities and difference
- Historical significance
- Historical interpretations
- Sources of evidence
All topics contain elements of historical skills and enrichment opportunities, including: Brooklands Transport Museum, Butser Ancient Farm, Hampton Court Palace and the British Museum.
